Canada and USA Jump on Fuel Efficient Bandwagonby Mr Fezziwig |
Rated: 7.0/10 + Add Rating and CommentRecently elected prime minister Steven Harper has been compared to George Bush for many reason’s, his stance on the environment is one of them. He comes from oil rich Alberta and wants those profits to keep flowing, the environment be dammed.
Recently his party tried to pass the environment bill ‘Clean Air Act’ with much fanfare but it turned into the first majot blunder of his new ruling conservative party as Canadians were severly dissapointed with the bill.
Now fast forward a few months to the competing party’s leadership race. It’s won by the only mainstream politician to make the enviroment a major political issue, Liberal Stephane Dion. The battle lines have been drawn. There’s now a clear difference between the parties (although the Liberal do have to shed some baggage, after signing Kyoto and letting it fail.)
With the first mainstream environmentalist political leader (he named his dog ‘Kyoto’), Stephane Dion will force the Conservatives to shore up support in the environment as it becomes a bigger and bigger issue with Canadians.
It’s amazing how similar Canadian and American political scenes are, within 2 months of the Democrats big win and environmental push, Canadians do exactly the same. Now all it takes is one country to take the lead in actual action taken and the other will be forced to follow or be disgraced. At the moment neither coutry will be imbarrassed as both countries are amoung the worst polluters in the world.
With green house gas emmission reduction gaining voter priority expect all parties to be jumping on a green fuel efficient band wagon.
